Building a Career in Tech as an Art Major: Katie Hubert’s Story
In October 2019, Katie Hubert celebrated one year at Tanium. She joined us as a Marketing Coordinator after graduating college with her photography and graphic design major. This is her Tanium story.
Katie
When I graduated from college, I always knew I wanted to one day become a Creative Director, but I was struggling to find a job in my area that I felt would project me in that direction. I went to Tanium, at first for an informal interview, and it just seemed to fit perfectly. I had been looking at smaller companies because I am an introvert and I like to work in my own space, but the way Tanium and the future of the marketing team was explained to me, I felt it made sense.
Finding My Passion
I originally started taking photos when I went on a backpacking trip through Yosemite National Park after my freshman year in high school. I was so in love with the nature and the vastness of everything, and how nature seems to make humans so humble. So, I picked up a camera and started taking photos and it just snowballed into this incredible passion.
I live and drive my life through what I’m passionate about. I feel you work so much better in an environment where you care. So from being an art major in college to taking on this role as a coordinator and in-house graphic designer at Tanium—these are things that I’m incredibly passionate about.
The Beginning of a Career
My main concern when I first graduated from college was “How am I going to find a place where I feel at home like I did on my rowing team? How am I going to find an office where it’s just as enthusiastic and hardworking as being out rowing on the water at 6 AM?” Joining Tanium was super exciting because what I found here was a welcoming environment. People here show up every day, super enthusiastic to be here and if someone needs help with something, people are always willing to lend a hand.
I feel like the luckiest person in the world to be working at this type of company, at my age straight out of college, and I know that sounds pretty cheesy, but it’s true. The people I’m surrounded by every day are so incredible, and I learn so much from every single person, not just in marketing, and have found everyone, especially our executive team, so patient and willing to answer my questions.
One Piece of Advice
I am following my passion, but if you don’t know what you want to do yet, start with figuring out what you don’t like and narrow it down. My advice would be to do informal interviews with people who inspire you. I’ve learned that most people are always happy to talk with you and to help you figure out what you like, and what you don’t like. Be patient with yourself, take time to figure it out and learn to appreciate what you can, where you are and utilize the people around you with more experience.
