Tanium’s Summer Intern Program: A Launch Pad to Leadership in Cybersecurity
A look at Tanium’s leading summer internship program – and why it’s a great option for students and professionals entering cybersecurity
Tanium has always recognized people as its greatest asset. Besides investing in extensive professional development and training, we also focus heavily on recruiting top talent – and interns are a key component.
Since our founding in 2007, Tanium has welcomed hundreds of future industry leaders as interns. In 2020, we launched a comprehensive summer internship program which has grown significantly in the years since, engaging between 40 and 70 interns each summer across all our departments.
The program’s unique, engaging structure is designed to educate, challenge, and nurture individuals and prepare them for a rewarding career in the rapidly evolving cybersecurity industry. Since 2020, Tanium has proudly extended full-time offers to over 80 interns across its engineering, sales, customer success, marketing, and general & administrative (G&A) departments.
As we celebrate National Intern Day on July 25, here is a breakdown of what makes Tanium’s summer internship program stand out – and some of the perks that participants can expect.
Why Tanium’s internship program ranks among the best
As a global leader in cloud-based endpoint management and security, Tanium empowers interns to participate in complex, mission-critical cybersecurity projects. Tanium delivers the real-world training that students and professionals need to thrive in today’s competitive, fast-paced business landscape.
In most internships you feel like an intern, with this internship you actually feel like you are working here full time.
Last year, Tanium’s internship program made WayUp and Yello’s Top 100 Internship Programs of 2023 list for the second consecutive year. And this year, the program is back and better than ever.
“At Tanium, interns are getting real on-the-job training, experience, and strategic projects that contribute to making the world a safer, more secure place,” WayUp says. “Tanium expects excellence and commits to giving interns the resources they need: world-class training programs, a network of previous interns, exposure to leadership, and more.”
Professional development opportunities
Tanium’s training program delivers much more than just on-the-job training and experience. It also serves to prepare professionals for the modern workforce and acclimate them with cybersecurity culture.
Training centers around the following topics:
- Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging (DEIB): Tanium is fully committed to building a diverse and inclusive culture. All interns are invited to attend a panel with full-time team members to learn why DEIB is critical and how to help foster an inclusive and welcoming environment.
- Professional feedback: In addition to receiving formal feedback, Tanium interns learn how to give and receive constructive feedback – an important skill in the collaborative, performance-driven cybersecurity field.
- Career growth and development: Launching a career can seem overwhelming, and it helps to learn from experienced individuals who are actively charting their own course. All interns will hear from senior team members about their career paths and tips for maximizing opportunities.
- Building a personal brand: During the final week of the program, Tanium offers personal brand training and networking mixers. Interns also receive LinkedIn and resume workshop training.
- Executive presentations: Whether you’re sharing an elevator pitch or a PowerPoint, how you present your ideas can go a long way. Tanium offers special training on how to present to executives, complete with practice sessions and advice from Tanium executives.
“In my prior internships at software companies, I’ve been exposed to various aspects of the tech industry, but the sessions at Tanium have provided unique insights,” says Daniel Kashif, a Support Center Intern based in Texas. “For example, David Hindawi’s session on innovation emphasized the importance of balancing visionary thinking with practical execution, a concept that resonated deeply with me given my experiences in fast-paced development environments. I also enjoyed Dan Streetman’s session on leadership, which highlighted the significance of empathy and transparent communication, which contrasts with the more hierarchical and rigid structures I’ve encountered elsewhere.”
Aliza Latif, a Support Technical Account Management intern based out of our Addison, Texas, office remarks on the supportive community encountered at Tanium. “From the interviews, I had a good feeling that the community at Tanium would be very supportive and tight-knit. However, upon arriving at the office, my mind was blown. Everyone here is extremely helpful and willing to dedicate time to you no matter how small the question is. I really do feel like part of the team!”
Looking forward, Kashif strongly believes the lessons from these sessions will help shape his approach in both academic and professional settings.
“David Hindawi’s insights on innovation will encourage me to not only think creatively but also to be mindful of the implementation process, ensuring that ideas are feasible and impactful,” adds Kashif. “As an aspiring founder of a team of nine at my startup, the opportunity to ask Hindawi questions about being a founder provided me with deep insights into leadership and perseverance. His advice on maintaining a clear vision while staying adaptable has been invaluable and will guide me as I lead my team through the challenges and growth phases.”
